How to prepare for your first shift at Nimbus

So you’ve decided to become a Nimbus member, we can’t wait to have you in our kitchens! We've put together a comprehensive guide to help you prepare for your first shift with confidence. These steps will help you familiarize yourself with our facility, and policies, and maximize your experience at Nimbus.

1. Complete your documentation: Before you start, ensure all necessary paperwork is completed. This includes understanding our Code of Conduct and facility guidelines provided during orientation. You can find these documents on The Food Corridor under the documents section. Additionally, make sure you have your DOH or DOA documentation, a Certificate of Insurance (COI), and workers' compensation (if applicable). Click here for a comprehensive overview of the documentation required to operate a food business in NYC.

2. Attend your virtual orientation: After completing your documentation, schedule a virtual orientation session. This session will cover Nimbus’s policies, procedures, and how to navigate The Food Corridor for booking kitchen spaces. It’s also a great opportunity to ask any initial questions you may have.

3. Attend your onsite orientation: Following the virtual orientation, participate in an onsite orientation session. This hands-on introduction will include a comprehensive tour of our facilities, safety protocols, emergency procedures, and meeting our onsite team. Familiarity with the kitchen layout and staff will help you feel confident on your first day.

4. Set up your storage: Organize your storage space efficiently, using the available dry, cold, and frozen storage options. Clear labeling and an inventory system will streamline your workflow during shifts.

5. Check out the events space during onsite orientation: While setting up your storage area, take time to explore our events space. Familiarize yourself with where events are hosted and stay informed about upcoming activities or workshops.

6. Ensure facility access: Familiarize yourself with our facility access systems like ButterflyMX or Brivo. Test your access before your first scheduled shift to ensure smooth entry and exit. Contact our support team if you encounter any issues.

7. Explore the neighborhood: After completing your onsite orientation, explore the vibrant neighborhood surrounding Nimbus. Whether you're in Chicago or New York, discover local cafes and markets. This will enhance your commute and help you find fresh, local ingredients.

8. Book your shifts: Now that you’re familiar with our facility, start booking your shifts. Nimbus offers flexible shift blocks in four-hour increments: 6 AM - 10 AM, 10 AM - 2 PM, 2 PM - 6 PM, and 6 PM - 10 PM. You can also book prep stations in convenient 2-hour increments. Booking your shifts in advance ensures you secure your preferred times.

9. Schedule your deliveries: Coordinate ingredient deliveries during our Kitchen Operations Management (KOM) hours: Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Plan to be onsite during delivery times to receive and store your products promptly.

10. Prepare your equipment: Ensure your personal kitchen equipment is ready for use. While Nimbus provides shared equipment, you’ll need your own hand tools like knives and graters. Double-check that everything is in good working condition and consider having backup tools.

11. Plan your menu: Planning a well-thought-out menu is essential for a successful shift. Take into account available ingredients and storage options. This will help you stay organized and accommodate any dietary restrictions or special requests.

By following these steps, you'll be well-prepared for your first shift at Nimbus. Our team is here to support you, so feel free to reach out with any questions. Welcome to Nimbus – we can’t wait to see your creativity flourish in our kitchen!
